Alaria?(Alaria esculenta), also called winged kelp or?“Wild Atlantic Wakame,”?is a brown seaweed typically found at depths 10 to 30+ feet below the high tide line in the sub-tidal zone. Because it grows in exposed, cold, and turbulent waters,?Alaria?often sustains damage to the leafy part of the seaweed, adding character to our wild-harvested whole leaf product. In the Atlantic,?Alaria esculenta?is recognized by its distinctive mid-rib, which extends throughout the entire blade.?Alaria and Wakame have been celebrated for generations in Northern Europe and East Asia as highly-nutritious and tasty vegetables from the sea, and it’s a rich source of protein, vitamins, and minerals.
Our?Alaria?comes in whole leaf and powder forms or as granules mixed in our 'Kelp Blend'. You can try blanching and noodling the leaf to make a traditional wakame based seaweed salad, or measure out some powder to add to your favorite smoothies.
