Dulse (Palmaria palmata) is a red seaweed commonly found attached to rocks and small boulders in the? intertidal zone and down to depths approaching 65 feet. Dulse grows as far south as New Jersey but generally prefers the colder waters of Maine and Canada on the western Atlantic shore. It can also be found in more northern and eastern Atlantic waters.?
Dulse is a low-fat food and a good source of potassium, iron, and other essential minerals and vitamins, and it contains about 20% protein - higher than what is typically found in chicken and many nuts. Dulse has a wonderful flavor and has been enjoyed by humans for thousands of years. There are accounts of Irish monks eating dulse in the early 12th century, and dulse has long been part of the culinary tradition of Wales, Brittany, and Iceland.
We offer dulse as whole leaf (smoked and not), flakes, granules, and powder, making the culinary options endless. Dulse powder or granules add nutrition and flavor to bread recipes or smoothies, and the flakes are delicious when added to chowder or sprinkled on salads. You can even enjoy Dulse leaf right out of the bag, made into a chip or as a vegan bacon substitute for a DLT! (dulse, lettuce, and tomato sandwich)
