Sea lettuce (Ulva lactuca) is the only green sea vegetable that we sell and it grows commonly in the tidal and the upper subtidal zones. It is thin and fragile being only two cells thick and expresses various shades of vibrant green as it matures. It resembles a small head of lettuce when in the water, thus its naming.
Sea lettuce is a sulfur-rich-food which gives it a bitter flavor and a distinctive aroma, but provides it with a host of potential health benefits including liver support and aiding in fighting age-related diseases. Sea lettuce is rich in protein, iron, copper, manganese, magnesium, and chlorophyll.
Sea lettuce is good in soups or salads. Experiment by tearing or cutting the whole dry leaves with scissors into your favorite dish. We also offer sea lettuce in flake and power form to make it easier to add to salads and smoothies.
